I turned the corner of the meat aisle in the grocery store. A young man in his early twenties stood there motionless, staring blankly through the glass freezer door at the boxes of hamburgers. The cheapest was about $26 for just six patties (a ridiculous price, given that our province, Alberta, is a major beef producer). Suddenly, as though waking from a stupor, the young man slowly opened another door, grabbed a box of cheap, processed sausage rolls at about a third of the cost, and strode off.Continue reading

Being Christian is not the result of an ethical choice or a lofty idea,
but the encounter with an event, a person,

Iam a cradle Catholic. There have been many key moments that have deepened my faith over the past five decades. But the ones that produced hope were when I personally encountered the presence and power of Jesus. This, in turn, led me to love Him and others more. Many years ago, my family was passing through Saskatchewan, Canada. The area we were traveling that night was renowned for “UFO sightings.” We discussed it in the car with a certain intrigue. Admittedly, I was hoping we might catch a glimpse of a spacecraft as my eyes squinted into the black sky.
Back then, my dad drove a big Dodge car where you could stretch out on the back window sill and watch the clouds or stars pass by. I crawled over the back seat onto the ledge and looked up. Suddenly, there were 6 bright lights in a row, seemingly hovering there. No lamposts, nothing but the lights. And then suddenly, they were gone. Continue reading

There is, as it were,
a very significant acceleration in time;
there’s an acceleration in time
just as there’s an acceleration in speed.
And we go faster and faster.
We must be very attentive to this
to understand what is happening
in today’s world…

World events are moving faster and faster. Revolutionary change is coming at us like the winds of a hurricane as we approach the eye of the Great Storm. As a watchman, I am amazed at the seismic news stories we track in a single day — the equivalent of a year’s worth of major stories only a few decades ago. Who can keep track of the wars, the sudden imposition of A.I., the soaring costs of living, the divisions in our families and nations, and the crisis of leadership in the Church? These are ferocious winds that, if we’re not careful, can blind, disorientate, and discourage us.Continue reading
